Summer produce stands are filled with blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and cherries, which most people eat because they taste sweet and feel like a guilt-free treat. However, new research suggests that eating these fruits can have a notable impact on cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Researchers analyzed nearly 30 clinical trials from around the world and found that the deep purple and red pigments in these fruits improved several markers of heart and metabolic health.

The deep purple and red pigments in berries, cherries, and purple grapes, known as anthocyanins, appear to slow the absorption of natural sugar into the bloodstream. This distinction may explain why berries, often viewed with suspicion due to their natural sugar content, kept showing up as protective in trial after trial.

For some people, eating fruit may cause a spike in blood sugar levels. Using a blood glucose monitor for a couple of weeks can help determine how eating fruit affects individual blood sugar levels.

A large analysis published in 2025 combined 29 randomized controlled trials involving over 2,000 participants. The results showed that LDL cholesterol dropped significantly among people who consumed anthocyanins compared to those who received a placebo. Total cholesterol and triglycerides also fell, while HDL cholesterol rose slightly.

Blood sugar markers moved in the right direction as well, with fasting blood glucose dropping and HbA1c, a marker of blood sugar control over roughly three months, decreasing in a statistically meaningful way.

Anthocyanins work through several overlapping pathways, including reducing enzymes involved in cholesterol production in the liver and slowing the absorption of sugar in the digestive tract. Antioxidant activity also plays a role in calming the inflammatory response at the cellular level.

While the effect sizes were modest, consistent daily habits that shift several markers in a healthy direction can add up meaningfully over years. Making anthocyanin-rich fruit a daily habit can be as simple as reaching for organic berries, such as blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries, and rotating between them based on what’s freshest and most affordable.

Add color to your plate beyond the berry aisle by incorporating purple grapes, cherries, red cabbage, and eggplant skin, which all carry the same protective pigments. Building a colorful plate widens the range of compounds working in the body.

Pairing fruit with protein or healthy fat can further steady blood sugar levels. A handful of berries alongside plain organic yogurt or a small portion of nuts slows the absorption of natural sugars into the bloodstream, making it a great mid-afternoon option.
