Summer brings barbecues, open windows, and the familiar sting of seasonal allergies—sneezing fits, watery eyes, and a runny nose that can ruin an otherwise perfect day outside. New research indicates a possible solution may already be in most kitchens.

Plant compound reduces allergy symptoms in clinical trials

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice analyzed 13 randomized controlled trials with 823 participants who had allergic rhinitis. Seven trials focused on seasonal allergies caused by pollen, while the other six examined year-round symptoms.

Researchers examined polyphenols, a group of plant compounds including quercetin and green tea catechins. Among those with seasonal allergies, these compounds lowered total nasal symptom scores compared to placebo.

Quercetin showed a distinct advantage. While antihistamines block histamine after release, quercetin stabilizes mast cells—the immune cells responsible for histamine production. By preventing these cells from reacting, it may stop symptoms before they start.

Everyday foods and supplements offer accessible relief

Quercetin is common in foods like organic onions, apples with skin, and capers. Red onions contain the highest amounts, making them a simple substitute for white or yellow varieties. Berries and leafy greens also provide smaller quantities that contribute to daily intake.

Supplements typically offer 500 to 1,000 milligrams per day. Taking them with a fat-containing meal improves absorption, and studies suggest waiting two to four weeks for effects—matching the trial timeline.

A Japanese study tested 200 milligrams daily for four weeks. Participants reported improved nasal symptoms and better sleep, which often suffers from chronic congestion. Since poor sleep and allergies worsen each other, easing one can help the other.

Local honey and saline nasal rinses remain reasonable companions to try alongside quercetin, since they work through entirely different mechanisms. Layering a few well-supported strategies together, rather than relying on any single fix, matches how allergy symptoms actually respond in most people. Tracking which combination helps most through a single pollen season provides useful information for the next one.

Allergies and immune health share common ground

Seasonal allergies and immune resilience involve similar overactive immune responses. Supporting immune function with nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc may reduce allergic reaction severity. The same applies to managing inflammation and toxin exposure, which some research connects to higher allergy and autoimmune risks.

The connection explains why immune-supporting approaches—such as probiotics or fermented foods—sometimes ease allergy symptoms. While not a cure, these methods may help the body react more calmly to pollen.

Quercetin provides a low-risk option to test alongside other strategies. Unlike medications, it doesn’t cause drowsiness or dry mouth.

The review’s findings confirm natural compounds can help manage seasonal discomfort. For allergy sufferers, this offers a small but useful way to enjoy summer without constant sneezing. Maintaining overall health may further reduce symptoms over time.
